Tree Trimming, Pruning, and Shaping
First and foremost, determine what type of pruning is necessary to maintain and improve the health, appearance, and safety of your trees. You should never top certain species of trees since this could lead to multiple problems and hazards in the future. That is, if the tree survives at all! Different species of trees can endure different trimming methods as well. Let our highly trained and experienced Arborist provide you with the information to make the best choice.
Reasons for pruning or trimming a tree:
- Eliminating branches that rub or cross over each other.
- Removing limbs that interfere with wires, building facades, gutters, roofs, chimneys, windows, or those that obstruct streets or sidewalks.
- Removing dead or weak limbs that pose a hazard or may lead to decay.
- Removing diseased or insect-infested limbs. Limbs that are weak or decayed are more vulnerable to insects and pests.
- Improving structure to lessen wind resistance and reduce the potential for storm damage.
- Training young trees.
- Removing limbs damaged by adverse weather conditions.
- Thinning or removal of branches to increase light penetration.
- Improving the shape or silhouette of the tree.
Our Arborists can review your trees with you and provide a recommended list of maintenance to perform as well as the best timeframe to follow.
Storm and Wind Damage Cleanup
Storms may cause limbs or entire trees to fall, as pictured, often landing on homes, cars, other structures, or other trees.
The weight of storm-damaged trees is great, and they can be very dangerous to remove or trim. Here at A1 Stump Removal and Tree Service, we can perform the job in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to your property. A crane may be required to lift the tremendous weight of the tree safely off of your belongings. Without a device to hold the tree in place as it is cut, the weight of the freed piece may fall further, creating more damage and possible bodily injury.
Few tree services in Spokane have the appropriate equipment for critical storm cleanup; you came to the right place.

Tree Pest Control
Do you have sticky or sappy leaves? Small bore holes in the bark or leaves? Discoloration or deformities in any of the tree parts? Any of these signs are most likely evidence of tree pest infestation. A1 Stump Removal is well equipped to handle any pest problem. We like to use a technique called System Injection.
Pest such as aphids, adelgid, borers, beetles, caterpillars, galls, leaf miners, spider-mites, and weevils can be prevented and/or controlled by systemic injections of a chemical called Merit. The Systemic Injection is so effective because the chemical is picked up from the roots of the tree and distributed throughout the entire structure of the tree. Many species of trees are susceptible to pests that can be eradicated and prevented using this method. Samples can be taken from the leaves, twigs, branches, roots, stems, needles, cones, wood, bark, or soil around the trunk of the tree to obtain an exact causal agent.
Biotic plant problems are caused by living organisms, such as bacteria, nematodes, viruses, fungi, insects, mites, and animals. Abiotic disorders are caused by non-living factors such as freeze injury, chemical drift, drought stress, wind injury, sun-scald, nutrient deficiency, or improper horticultural practices, such as over-watering or planting too deep. Unfortunately, the damage caused by these various living and non-living agents can appear very similar. Let our Arborists put their knowledge and experience to the job of identifying your tree's needs.
Early in March we have most of our systemic injections for tree pests scheduled. The injections are most effective in the early Spring. Yet if you do have an infestation of borer, aphid, beetle, Balsam Wool Adelgid (BWA), or any other tree pest, we recommend to do the systemic injection immediately to knock the bug out as soon as possible to prevent further damage, disease, and/or decay.
During this same time of year, it is a great time for pruning. Half of our return customers are scheduled for Spring and the other half for Fall.

Tree Care Tips by A1 Stump Removal
Your Spokane Tree Care Experts!
Tree Mulching:
Mulching your trees for the extreme weather of the high heat or the low temperatures is crucial to the survival of the plant. Wood chips and decorative rock are one way to mulch and probably the most attractive to your landscape. The downside to mulching your trees with wood chips is that the chips are after some of the same nutrients (primarily nitrogen) as the trees, causing lower levels of these nutrients to be dispersed into the soil and available for the tree. While this is more of a concern with fresh wood chips, it is something to keep in mind. Rocks shield the top layer of soil from the direct sunlight and frost layer in the winter, but rocks are not able to retain moisture as well as organic material can.
Although not as appealing to the eye, we recommend the following method- especially for newly planted trees. After bringing your soil level to the root crown of the tree, place a layer of newspaper on top of the fresh soil and then apply 2-4 inches of grass clippings on top of the newspaper.
We have had great success with this technique and encourage you to treat your trees with the same care!
Deep water your trees:
With the temperatures reaching triple digits in the Summer, supplemental watering of your trees, shrubs, and lawn is crucial.
Your trees are at high risk of showing decline during the high heats that we are dealing with. Stay ahead of the weather by applying extra water directly to the roots. Once the tree roots dry up and die, they are gone for good and you will notice dead or dying spots throughout the canopy of your tree. These areas will take years to fill in the holes that were created.
Deep water larger trees earlier in the morning and late afternoon/early evening. Soaker type hoses are great, but you could also use any sort of drip hose or just the hose turned on directly at the base of the tree, until the ground below the drip-line of the tree is nice and saturated.
